After a decade-long hiatus, the Hummer is making its triumphant return as an all-electric pickup truck.

The first of its kind in GMC's portfolio, the 2022 Hummer EV runs on an Ultium battery system that boasts an estimated 350-plus-mile driving range and 800-volt DC fast charging.

"The GMC Hummer EV is revolutionary, defying what the industry thinks of as a pickup truck," Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC, said in a statement. "The Edition 1's tailored off-road content will make Hummer EV's unprecedented capability and zero-emissions a very special proposition for customers."

Initial production is scheduled to begin late next year at GM's Factory ZERO Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center—a 40-year-old facility that's been repurposed as the company's first dedicated electric vehicle assembly plant. Future production vehicles made there will offer zero emissions, according to GMC.

Based on the military Humvee, General Motors launched its first Hummer models in 1998. By the mid-noughties, though, an economic recession and failed acquisition drove GM to dismantle the brand; the last Hummer H3 rolled off the line in May 2010. The automaker began teasing its return early this year, revealing two models—an electric pickup truck and SUV—to be sold under the GMC Hummer EV brand.

Edition 1 highlights include 0-60 mph acceleration in three seconds, drive mode control, an Infinity Roof and removable transparent Sky Panels, and a large infotainment screen—powered by Epic Games' Unreal Engine. GMC's 1,000 horsepower Hummer EV will be available in fall 2021, starting at $112,595.

"This innovative truck comes to market with speed and purpose, bringing GM another step closer to an all-electric future," General Motors President Mark Reuss said. "With our Ultium Drive architecture as the foundation for an exceptionally broad range of performance, Hummer EV is perfect for the customer who wants capability, efficiency, and performance."

If all goes well with next year's Edition 1, drivers can look forward to additional trims introduced in future models, including the $79,995 Hummer EV2 (spring 2024), $89,995 EV 2X (spring 2023), and $99,995 EV3X (fall 2022).
