Cinema camera company Blackmagic Design has unveiled the look and specs of its upcoming Ursa Cine Immersive camera in development that will be able to shoot footage optimized for Apple's Vision Pro mixed reality headset.
The Ursa Cine Immersive camera will have two eye-like lenses to mimic the Vision Pro experience. Each "eye" will offer 8160 x 7200 resolution at 90 frames per second and 16 stops of dynamic range, according to a post Blackmagic shared Monday evening. The lens system captures footage from each eye separately and sends it to a single file in Blackmagic's RAW format.
"Built on the new URSA Cine platform, URSA Cine Immersive features a fixed, custom, stereoscopic 3D lens system with dual 8K image sensors," Blackmagic CEO Grant Petty said in a statement.
The Ursa Cine Immersive camera will have a top mounting bracket that can be used to attach a handle for handheld footage. It'll also be light enough to mount to a drone for aerial footage. The camera will have 8TB of built-in storage, two 5-inch HDR touchscreens, an external color status LCD, a 10G Ethernet port, USB-C connectivity, and XLR audio support, to name a few of its other specs.
Apple briefly mentioned its partnership with Blackmagic during Monday's WWDC event. In addition to the upcoming camera hardware, Blackmagic is also creating a new version of its DaVinci Resolve video editing software optimized for "immersive video." The DaVinci Resolve update will allow filmmakers to edit the immersive video they shoot as well as "pan, tilt, and roll clips" that can be viewed and altered via regular computer screens or the Vision Pro itself.
Both the Ursa Cine Immersive Camera and the Vision Pro-optimized version of DaVinci Resolve are expected to launch later this year. Pricing for the upcoming camera has not yet been revealed, however.
As a camera company, Blackmagic is primarily known for its line of smaller, high-resolution cinema cameras. Like Red, Blackmagic offers ultra high-resolution cinema cameras at slightly lower price points than some of Hollywood's other well-known camera brands. Blackmagic also already offers 6K and 12K-resolution cameras, like the 6K Pocket Cinema Camera.
