Face ID was introduced with iOS 11 as a way to unlock an iPhone X and authenticate purchases and logins. With iOS 12, Face ID has been improved and enhanced. You can now add an alternate appearance, either for yourself or for another person. It's a handy trick if you wear glasses, or if someone close to you needs regular access to your iPhone XS£1149 at Amazon UK. Now you and your significant other can sign into the same device with your own Face IDs. Let's check this out.

Set Up Face ID

This may seem a bit obvious, but you have to set up Face ID first before you can set up an alternate appearance or add another person to your device. If this is a new device, or you just haven't set up Face ID yet, here's how to complete the process.

Set Up an Alternate Appearance

On your iPhone, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Enter your passcode. At this point you will notice that you have a new option on this menu screen. Tap Set Up an Alternate Appearance to add a second Face ID to your device.

Set Up a Second Face ID

From this point, you can treat the process similarly to how you set up your initial Face ID—the only difference being the conditions for your alternate appearance. This is the point where you put on or take off your glasses. If you are setting up a Face ID on your iPhone for someone else, they will need to be present for this next step.

Scan Your Face

At the screen for How to Set Up Face ID, click the Get Started button. Position your face inside the frame and rotate your head until the green lines complete the circle. Tap Continue after the first Face ID scan is complete. Repeat the process for the second scan. Another screen pops up to tell you that Face ID is now set up.

Test Your Face ID

Before you go about your day, it’s a good idea to make sure that both Face IDs on your iPhone are working. Put your device in lock mode and try to unlock it using your standard Face ID. If that works, try the new Face ID you just set up.

What You Can Do With Face ID

Once you set up Face ID and alternate appearance, you can use it to log into apps and sign into websites. And if you want to let someone use your phone without adding them to Face ID, you can temporarily disable Face ID.

My Experience

I've been working for PCMag since early 2016 writing tutorials, how-to pieces, and other articles on consumer technology. Beyond PCMag, I've written news stories and tutorials for a variety of other websites and publications, including CNET, ZDNet, TechRepublic, Macworld, PC World, Time, US News & World Report, and AARP Magazine. I spent seven years writing breaking news for CNET as one of the site’s East Coast reporters. I've also written two books for Wiley & Sons—Windows 8: Five Minutes at a Time and Teach Yourself Visually LinkedIn.

My Areas of Expertise

I've used Windows, Office, and other Microsoft products for years so I'm well versed in that world. I also know the Mac quite well. I'm always working with iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and Android on my various mobile devices. And these days, I write a lot about AI, so that's become another key area for me.

The Tech I Use

My wife always jokes about all the tech products we have around the house, but I manage to put them to good use for my articles. I like Lenovo computers, so I own a couple of Lenovo desktops and several laptops. I have three MacBooks and a Mac mini. For my mobile life and work, I use an iPhone 16 Pro, iPad Pro, and iPad mini as well as an Apple Watch. But since I write about Android, I own several Android phones and tablets. Like any tech person, I have a cabinet full of cables, wires, and assorted mysterious gadgets. And when it's time to take a break from writing, I have an old Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii, both of which I use for exercise and fitness games.
