Apple doesn't like leaving anything to chance, so when manufacturing of yet another range of new iPhones begins, the company ensures a number of suppliers are on tap feeding it components. LG looks to be the latest company to benefit from that thinking.

When the 2018 iPhones launch later this year, Apple is expected to offer three new handsets. There will be 6.5-inch and a 5.8-inch OLED models, but to cater for consumers on tighter budgets, we're also expecting to see a 6.1-inch model with an LCD display. As MacRumors reports, LG is thought to have secured orders for all three displays.

In total, the new contract will see LG produce 20 million LCD panels and up to four million OLED panels before the end of the year. Production will be handled at LG's E6 6G plant in Paju, Korea and shouldn't come as too much of a surprise following the news last year that Apple had decided to invest $2.67 billion in LG's OLED panel production facilities.

The 2018 order is just the start, though. OLED panel shipments to Apple are expected to increase to 10 million in 2019, with reports that Apple also wants as many as 70 million LCD panels this year alone. With LG supplying 20 million, it leaves Apple's existing display partners (Sharp, Japan Display, Samsung) to make up the rest. However, if Apple is only going to offer one LCD iPhone, that total may fall and more demand placed on OLED supply.

We shouldn't have to wait too much longer to find out exactly what Apple has planned. New iPhone announcements typically happen in September, meaning another 10 weeks or so until the big reveal. Apple, would of course prefer you to buy an iPhone 8 or iPhone X right now rather than waiting to see what comes next.
