The iPad is really having a moment with quarantine. You're probably using yours for work, to read magazines, maybe take a class, and to watch all those shows and movies you now have plenty of time to stream. Meanwhile, your kids are catching up with classmates on Zoom, learning along with apps, and taking dance breaks

Putting the emphasis on breaks here, you're going to want to reduce the possibility that something can happen to your kid's iPad when they're getting so much use. We rounded up some cases that range from soft and cute to all-out military-grade protection.

Feitenn 3D Cartoon Butterfly iPad Case

This butterfly is pretty and practical. Its EVA foam absorbs shocks, and its wings act as a stand. Choose from a variety of colors and a smaller version for the iPad mini.

GumDrop FoamTech

The GumDrop FoamTech case is made of soft, protective foam and has a handle that can also be used as a stand.

Poetic TurtleSkin iPad Case

The thick silicone of the Poetic TurtleSkin case keeps iPads protected from bumps and amplifies sound with its speaker cutouts. It's available for all iPads, including the mini

Pottery Barn Kids Faux Fur Animal iPad Case

This pettable case from Pottery Barn Kids will be a favorite with small children, ears down.

Pzoz Bear iPad Case

This Pzoz case is, well, unbearably cute. It also has easy-grip handles on the side and a kickstand in the back. It comes in sizes to fit all iPads, even the mini.

Speck Case-E

Speck's Case-E is pretty mighty (even when it's in mini size). It's sturdy enough to protect iPads from drops, and its arms serve as a stand and wrap around car seats for on-the-go viewing.

Speck iGuy

Speck's iGuy can stand on his own when it comes to protecting iPads. (iGuy also comes in a smaller size for the mini.)

TopEsct iPad Case for Kids

Any which way you look at it, the TopEsct iPad case is a solid choice for iPads (including the mini). It's made of sturdy silicone, can be carried multiple ways, attaches to car seats, and comes with a tempered glass screen cover.

Urban Armor Gear Metropolis Series

Urban Armor Gear's Metropolis Series is designed for extreme situations—like your kids.

Cardboard Safari TV iPad Stand

Kids won't realize the nostalgia of the Cardboard Safari iPad stand, but they'll love it anyway. (It also comes in a Mini version.)

LapGear Lap Pet Tablet Pillow Unicorn

This LapGear unicorn is a cuddly way to keep an iPad close.

Ty Omar

Beanie Babies haven't held onto their value, but they can hold onto an iPad. Ty's Omar the owl is an adorable way to prop up an iPad.

My Experience

My title is Senior Features Writer, which is a license to write about absolutely anything if I can connect it to technology (I can). I’ve been at PCMag since 2011 and have covered the surveillance state, vaccination cards, ghost guns, voting, ISIS, art, fashion, film, design, gender bias, and more. You might have seen me on TV talking about these topics or heard me on your commute home on the radio or a podcast. Or maybe you’ve just seen my Bernie meme

I strive to explain topics that you might come across in the news but not fully understand, such as NFTs and meme stocks. I’ve had the pleasure of talking tech with Jeff Goldblum, Ang Lee, and other celebrities who have brought a different perspective to it. I put great care into writing gift guides and am always touched by the notes I get from people who’ve used them to choose presents that have been well-received. Though I love that I get to write about the tech industry every day, it’s touched by gender, racial, and socioeconomic inequality and I try to bring these topics to light.

Outside of PCMag, I write fiction, poetry, humor, and essays on culture.

My Areas of Expertise

  • Making incomprehensible tech news easy to understand
  • Expanding the boundaries of topics covered in the industry
  • Figuring out tips and tricks in apps and on devices and letting you know about them
  • Putting together gift guides for everyone in your life

The Technology I Use

All that gadgets is gold for me: my iPhone 11 Pro, my fifth-generation iPad that I use only for streaming videos and music, my iPad mini 4 that I like to take with me whenever I carry a bag that can fit it, and my MacBook Pro. Why are they all different shades of gold, though? What’s going on, Apple?

None of them quite live up to my two past loves: my LG Lotus LX600 phone and my Sony Walkman NW-E005 MP3 player.

I've never given up wired earbuds so I was ahead of all those trend pieces. I use a Mangotek Lightning-to-3.5mm headphone jack adapter to connect them to my phone.

I have had so many ebook readers, but I prefer paper to them all. Still, my Kindle Paperwhite is perfect for traveling or when I’m too impatient to wait for a book to be released in paperback.
