OpenAI has launched a new low-cost subscription plan for ChatGPT in India. At INR 399 (around $4.60) per month, the ChatGPT Go plan expands the usage limits of key features already available in the Free plan.

"With this plan, users get everything in Free, and 10x more messages with GPT-5 auto, 10x more image generations, 10x more file uploads and 2x longer memory for more personalized responses," Srinivas Narayanan, VP of engineering at OpenAI, wrote in an X post.

Additionally, users in India will now also see pricing in rupees and be able to pay for Go and Plus plans through the country's Unified Payments Interface (UPI), a system that enables instant money transfers between bank accounts via mobile devices. Previously, the pricing was in USD, and the mode of payment was restricted to app stores and credit/debit cards.

The ChatGPT Go plan is only available in India at launch. OpenAI, however, has plans to expand it to other regions in the future. "Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key ask from users! We're rolling out Go in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding to other countries," ChatGPT head Nick Turley said in an announcement post on X.

The plan does have a few minor caveats. Users will not be able to try out OpenAI's legacy models like 4o or the text-to-video generator Sora. For access to both, you'll have to upgrade to the costlier Plus plan.

It's common for companies to test exclusive, lower-priced subscription tiers in India to grow their user base. Netflix, for example, has an ad-free, mobile-only plan that starts as low as INR 149 (~$1.71) per month. The equivalent of that isn't currently available in the US.
