Statistically speaking, there's a good chance that you don't use AI very much.

Less than a quarter of adults (23%) have ever used ChatGPT, according to a March 2024 Pew Research Center study. So, despite all the hype surrounding AI right now, it's still not something that makes an impact in most people's daily lives.

This series is all about figuring out how to incorporate AI into your life, like helping you get in shape, ease the burden of wedding planning, or even sell your old car for more than it's worth.

In each installment, we'll showcase a real-world challenge that we've personally faced, then walk you through how we tried using AI to overcome it. The idea isn't that you'll follow along and replicate our exact methods, but rather that when you finish each article, you'll walk away with a new AI-based technique in your arsenal.

We like to think of it like a TV cooking show of sorts. We might show you a specific recipe and demonstrate techniques for preparing a specific dish, but what we're really all about is helping you learn your way around the proverbial kitchen, showing you how to "cook" with AI so that you can make something great yourself.

Go ahead. Try AI.

About the Authors

PCMag's Brian Westover and Emily Forlini are teaming up for Try AI, bringing together Brian's AI enthusiast outlook and Emily's AI industry expertise to offer well-rounded, smart stories about how to use AI to save you money, reclaim your time, and tame the overload of modern living.

Brian is a long-time tech journalist, writing about everything from laptops and smart TVs to fitness equipment and Starlink in his 14-year career. An early adopter of ChatGPT, he uses AI tools daily, and his position covering laptops has given him a front-row seat for the rapid growth of the AI PC category. His hardware coverage includes testing and reviewing the latest AI-enabled processors and Microsoft's AI-infused Copilot+ PCs. Additionally, he has written about how mankind should tackle AI, how to run free open-source AI models on your laptop, and how to use ChatGPT to code custom bookmarklets.

Emily is a former Big Tech insider turned tech reporter. She reports the AI news for PCMag every day, but is still somewhat skeptical about how much it can add to her own life and wants to explore more. In addition to her daily reporting on AI, she has written PCMag’s first-ever AI chatbot reviews for our roundup of the best chatbots. She has also interviewed famed futurist Ray Kurzweil.

My Experience

From the laptops on your desk to satellites in space and AI that seems to be everywhere, I cover many topics at PCMag. I've covered PCs and technology products for over 15 years at PCMag and other publications, among them Tom's Guide, Laptop Mag, and TWICE. As a hardware reviewer, I've handled dozens of MacBooks, 2-in-1 laptops, Chromebooks, and the latest AI PCs. As the resident Starlink expert, I've done years of hands-on testing with the satellite service. I also explore the most valuable ways to use the latest AI tools and features in our Try AI column.

The Technology I Use

Between the Starlink dish on my roof and the laptop or desktop I'm using right now, I've always got a new tech product in front of me. I have five or six laptops in rotation at any moment, along with a couple of mini PCs, two smart TVs, and a couple of Chromebooks for good measure.

Everything is connected via Starlink, using the latest Dish V4 and Gen 3 Router, letting me live my tech-centric life in rural Idaho.

When I'm not testing and reviewing products, I'm probably using one of a dozen AI tools for everything from work and productivity to entertainment and saving some money.

My Experience

As a news and features writer at PCMag, I cover the biggest tech trends that shape the way we live and work. I specialize in on-the-ground reporting, uncovering stories from the people who are at the center of change—whether that’s the CEO of a high-valued startup or an everyday person taking on Big Tech. I also cover daily tech news and breaking stories, contextualizing them so you get the full picture.

I came to journalism from a previous career working in Big Tech on the West Coast. That experience gave me an up-close view of how software works and how business strategies shift over time. Now that I have my master's in journalism from Northwestern University, I couple my insider knowledge and reporting chops to help answer the big question: Where is this all going?

My Expertise

I'm the expert at PCMag for on-the-ground feature reporting and trending tech news, with a particular focus on electric vehicles and AI. I've published hundreds of articles and am also a podcast host, a bi-weekly tech correspondent for CBS News, a panel speaker and moderator, and a frequent contributor to a range of news and radio channels around the country.

The Technology I Use

All the latest from Apple and Microsoft, but I'll never give up my wired headphones!
