Apple's future AI products may include partnerships with longtime rivals Google and Meta, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The iPhone maker is reportedly exploring integrating Google Gemini and Meta AI into Apple Intelligence, a suite of generative AI features unveiled earlier this month at WWDC. The splashy announcement featured a ChatGPT integration, though Craig Federighi, Apple's SVP of Software Engineering, said during his presentation that the company will also consider other AIs.

Apple looks to be casting a wide net. In addition to Google and Meta, the company is also in talks with startups Anthropic and Perplexity AI. Anthropic released a new model last week, which it says performs better than OpenAI's newest model, GPT-4o.

(After the Journal story published, Bloomberg said Meta is not in the running. The idea was shelved "months ago," according to Mark Gurman.)

If Apple integrates any other AIs into Apple Intelligence, people will be able to choose which one they want to use, the Journal says. But unlike Apple's lucrative search deal with Google, no money will be exchanged on the AI front, at least not directly. The idea is that giving these companies a presence on Apple's massive platform will help drive subscriptions to their premium products, like Gemini Advanced or Anthropic's Claude Pro.

Those who pay $20 per month for ChatGPT Plus, for example, will be able to log into their accounts through Apple Intelligence, giving them access to premium features inside Apple's ecosystem.

When it arrives in the fall, Apple Intelligence will also offer its own AI-powered features for image generation, Siri, and writing assistance, among other things.
