Spotify is rolling out an AI Playlist feature in beta that will allow you to type in a prompt to get a curated list of songs, the music-streaming service announced Sunday.

Users can reference fictional characters, real-life locations, or emojis in their prompts, according to Spotify's blog post, and the AI will create a playlist with 30 songs that attempts to match the vibe. The feature will be visible from the Library menu alongside a sparkle icon.

Once users type in their prompts, they'll be able to refine and edit their AI playlists using more text prompts before they're officially created. Spotify's AI will even give the playlists a name that relates to the prompt.

What's the catch? For now, the tool is in beta and only available to Premium users on Android and iOS in the UK and Australia. Spotify's AI playlist feature also won't accept prompts that mention brands or current events, and says that any "offensive" prompts aren't allowed, either.

New features could also mean rising subscription prices. Last week, Bloomberg reported that Spotify plans to hike its Premium subscription prices in the UK and Australia this month. US users can expect to see their prices rise sometime this year, following a 2023 increase.

The music-streaming platform tends to do limited rollouts of new features before pushing them more broadly. Spotify previously launched music videos on its app for users in 11 different countries last month, but the US wasn't included in that list. And in November, it decided to offer 15 hours of free audiobook listening to users in the US after first testing the feature in the UK and Australia.

AI Playlist isn't Spotify's first AI feature, however. Last year, it launched an AI DJ that examines a users' music taste based on the playlists and songs they favor. Spotify says that the more users interact with the AI DJ by responding to its outputs, the better its results will get.

I’m a reporter for PCMag covering tech news early in the morning. Prior to joining PCMag, I was a producer and reporter at Decrypt and launched its gaming vertical, GG. I have previously written for Input, Game Rant, Dot Esports, and other places, covering a range of gaming, tech, crypto, and entertainment news.

I’ve been a PC gamer since The Sims (yes, the original) in the CD-ROM days. I still think about my first-gen pink iPod mini, which, looking back, was not so mini. In 2020, I finally built my own custom Windows PC for gaming with a 3090 graphics card, but I also regularly use Mac and iOS devices. As a reporter, I’m passionate about documenting the wide world of tech and how it affects our daily lives.
