AI startup Mistral AI has a new large language model called Mistral Large and a ChatGPT competitor it's dubbed Le Chat.

"Mistral Large achieves strong results on commonly used benchmarks, making it the world's second-ranked model generally available through an API" after GPT-4, Mistral says.

The LLM is fluent in five languages: English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian. For those who need to optimize latency and cost, Mistral Small is "a refined intermediary solution between our open-weight offering and our flagship model," the company says.

The new AI chatbot, Le Chat, is available in beta for free; all you need is a login.

Mistral says Microsoft will make Mistral Large available on Azure AI and the Mistral AI platform, several months after Microsoft added Mistral 7B to its Azure AI model catalog at Microsoft Ignite.

The multi-year partnership will allow Mistral AI "to accelerate the development and deployment of their next generation large language models (LLMs) and represents an opportunity for Mistral AI to unlock new commercial opportunities, expand to global markets, and foster ongoing research collaboration," Microsoft says.

Microsoft has also invested billions in ChatGPT creator OpenAI, and is betting big on AI. At Ignite, CEO Satya Nadella called Microsoft "the Copilot company," a reference to its own AI.

Per TechCrunch, Mistral AI comprises former Google DeepMind and Meta employees. While its original LLM was open source, these larger models are not. For access to its API on Mistral Large, Mistral AI is charging $8 per million of input tokens and $24 per million of output tokens (compared to $60 per million input tokens and $120 per million output tokens on GPT-4).

Hello, my name is Joe and I am a tech blogger. My first real experience with tech came at the tender age of 6 when I started playing Final Fantasy IV (II on the SNES) on the family's living room console. As a teenager, I cobbled together my first PC build using old parts from several ancient PCs, and really started getting into things in my 20s. I served in the US Army as a broadcast journalist. Afterward, I served as a news writer for XDA-Developers before I spent 11 years as an Editor, and eventually Senior Editor, of Android Authority. I specialize in gaming, mobile tech, and PC hardware, but I enjoy pretty much anything that has electricity running through it.
