Samsung’s President and Head of Mobile Experience Business Tae-Moon Roh says the tech firm will continue to add AI-powered features to its range of products, including its wearable devices.

In a Wednesday post, Roh dubbed AI “the most transformative technology of the century.” He argued that it’s poised to bring about a mobile “revolution” despite AI’s copyright concerns and continued risk of “hallucinations,” which is where generative AI tools can make up false information and present it as the truth to users.

For now, it seems that’s a risk Samsung is willing to take.

“We’re only getting started,” Roh said of Samsung’s AI plans. “Galaxy users will be able to enjoy more Galaxy AI features that build on these ideas and concepts over time as Samsung continuously enhances and grows the mobile AI experience.”

While the Samsung Galaxy S24 phone series already has loads of AI features like Google's "Circle to Search" feature and an AI-powered camera zoom, the company is now trying to pack AI features into some of its wearables.

“We are already planning next steps for Galaxy AI beyond smartphones—optimizing it for various categories of devices across various services,” Roh said. “In the near future, select Galaxy wearables will use AI to enhance digital health and unlock a whole new era of expanded, intelligent health experiences.”

This means Samsung’s Galaxy Watch wearables could be getting some new AI upgrades soon in addition to its other upcoming health features. Last month, Samsung said some of its watch's sensor features are already being combined with third-party AI algorithms in an effort to improve user health.

This month Samsung announced it got FDA approval to add an upcoming sleep apnea detection feature, which is able to detect one type of sleep apnea, to its Galaxy Watch's Health Monitor app. While Samsung hasn’t said whether this feature uses AI, it’s one that rivals like Apple don’t yet offer to customers.

In a footnote, Roh's post mentions that Samsung is also looking to bring some of the S24’s AI features to the Galaxy S23 devices, the S23 FE, the Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, and the Tab S9 tablet via future software updates. The exact features Samsung will port over haven’t been confirmed yet, however, and the exact devices that get AI features could be subject to change.

Reporter

I’m a reporter for PCMag covering tech news early in the morning. Prior to joining PCMag, I was a producer and reporter at Decrypt and launched its gaming vertical, GG. I have previously written for Input, Game Rant, Dot Esports, and other places, covering a range of gaming, tech, crypto, and entertainment news.

I’ve been a PC gamer since The Sims (yes, the original) in the CD-ROM days. I still think about my first-gen pink iPod mini, which, looking back, was not so mini. In 2020, I finally built my own custom Windows PC for gaming with a 3090 graphics card, but I also regularly use Mac and iOS devices. As a reporter, I’m passionate about documenting the wide world of tech and how it affects our daily lives.
