Mobile World Congress kicked off in Barcelona this week, and the PCMag mobile team is on the show floor. The big news so far is Samsung's formal announcement of the much-anticipated Galaxy S6 smartphone.

At a glance, the Galaxy S6 doesn't look a lot different from previous models, but on closer inspection there are a lot of improvements that should make it a hit with Android fans. First of all, this will be the first Galaxy phone that uses Samsung's own Exynos 7 processor. That is important because the Exynos 7 is the first chip designed using a 14-nanometer process. We will have to test it to really know its potential, but the it should make the Galaxy S6 very fast and energy efficient.

Samsung also bumped the phone's camera resolution to 16 megapixels and increased the sharpness of the display: a stunning 577 pixels per inch.

But perhaps the biggest improvement in the Galaxy S6 is the building materials. Samsung replaced its traditional plastic construction with Gorilla Glass 4 and aluminium--addressing what was perhaps the number one complaint among Galaxy owners. This is a move designed to compete not just against the Apple iPhone, but also high-end, well-built Android phones like the new HTC One M9.

The Galaxy S6 will be available on all major U.S. carriers starting in April, and we will have full reviews.
