If you've ever tried to watch TV outdoors in the bright sunlight, you've likely had to battle glare and reflection, only to be rewarded with a subpar picture with washed-out colors and terrible contrast. To combat the effects of direct sunlight, you need an HDTV with a high peak brightness level as well as protection against both glare and the damage caused by exposure to ultra violet (UV) rays. Enter the SunBrite Pro Series Direct-Sun Outdoor TV SB-4217HD ($3,895), a 42-inch weatherproof HDTV that looks great in any lighting condition. The SB-4217HD delivers a very bright picture, sharp imagery, and accurate colors, and it's designed for year-round outdoor use. You'll pay big bucks for this LED-backlit HDTV, and you don't get much in the way of features for your money. But if you enjoy watching the game outside under a blazing sun, the SB-4217HD delivers an excellent picture that's worthy of our Editors' Choice.

Design and Features
The SB-4217HD looks very similar to the SunBriteTV Signature Series SB-4670HD that we reviewed last year. The 42-inch, 1,920-by-1,080-pixel panel is housed in a black, silver, or white powder-coated aluminum cabinet that protects the TV against extreme temperatures (-40 to +122 degrees Fahrenheit), rain, dust, insects, and salt air. The screen has a semi-gloss coating that does a great job of eliminating glare without too much reflection, and incorporates Enhanced Solar Tolerance (EST) technology to prevent isotropic blackout, a condition which occurs when LCD cells become too hot and remain in the off position, creating black spots on the screen.

My Experience

I’ve been working with computers for ages, starting with a multi-year stint in purchasing for a major IBM reseller in New York City before eventually landing at PCMag (back when it was still in print as PC Magazine). I spent more than 14 years on staff, most recently as the director of operations for PC Labs, before hitting the freelance circuit as a contributing editor.

The Technology I Use

I do all of my writing on my aging but trusty Lenovo Thinkpad T460.

At home I have two wireless networks running: one for streaming, gaming, and other day-to-day networking tasks, and another for testing all sorts of smart home devices including smart plugs and switches, lighting, indoor and outdoor security cameras, home security systems, air conditioners, smart grills, robotic lawn mowers, pool cleaners, and whatever else finds its way to my door.

It’s not uncommon to find people standing in front of my house taking video of a robotic lawn mower traversing my lawn during the summer months. Now if only someone would come up with a robotic snow blower, I’d be all set.
