The Bottom Line

The Airport Check In's standard design won't inspire any catcalls as you walk down the street, but it makes up for its average looks with a solid, durable design, and more pockets and pouches than you'll know what to do with.

Pros & Cons

    • Solid build quality and design.
    • Tons of pockets and pouches.
    • Rain cover.
    • Adjustable for any notebook up to 17-inches.
    • Smaller sizes not available.

Most of the laptop bags that catch my eye are just as stylish as they are practical, but Think Tank Photo creates their bags to serve a different purpose, abandoning flashy looks in favor of a simple yet feature-packed design. The $149 Airport Check In embraces that practice, offering such features as expandable side pockets, a rolling-bag pass-through, and a rain cover to keep your laptop dry. All this comes in a plain black messenger bag that won't instantly give away the bag's contents to potential thieves.

Think Tank Photo is known throughout the professional photography community for its solidly made, dependable, low-profile bags. Most of the company's offerings are designed for professional photographers, but the Airport Check In is just as useful for laptop users carrying just a point-and-shoot camera.

The 18- by 14- by 5-inch bag includes two main storage compartments, as well as a padded laptop pocket in the rear with adjustable support for notebooks as large as 17 inches. The middle compartment has two side pockets for storing cables and papers, with enough space for several large books in between. And a third zippered compartment in the front of the bag offers one of the most comprehensive organizers I've seen, with plenty of space for pens, business cards, and electronics among the compartment's pockets and three zippered pouches.
