Google has discontinued the Nexus 7 tablet, pulling it from the Google Play store to make way for newer generations.

The device is still available from third-party platforms like Amazon, but only while supplies last.

Google declined to comment, but told Engadget that "some inventory" remains in stores and at carriers. The company's emphasis, however, is on the Nexus 9 "at this time."

Google unveiled the 7-inch Nexus 7 in 2012, and an upgraded version arrived a year later. This year, however, Google opted for a 6-inch Nexus 6 phablet and 8.9-inch Nexus 9 tablet.

The Nexus 7's demise should not be a huge surprise. Sales of the tablet and its larger 10-inch sibling started tapering off in the fall after the new Nexus launches. But now, the Google Play pages for the Nexus 7 simply has a red warning that says "The Nexus 7 is no longer available for purchase." The Nexus 10 link is completely dead.

The Nexus 5, meanwhile, disappeared last month.

The Nexus 9 sports a 2,048-by-1,536 display, as well as a soft-touch back and 8-megapixel rear camera. It also comes with a Nvidia K1 processor and runs Android Lollipop 5.0. It is available now for $399 to $599 in 16GB or 32GB variants with Wi-Fi or LTE; pick it up from the Google Play store in black, white, or sand. Folding cover and portable keyboard accessories are also sold separately.
