For a long while, it was a challenge to find decent Android tablets to test. The category existed for some time before we were able to round up the best ones. But as Google continues to refine its mobile operating system, we're seeing a steady flow of high-quality Android tablets. And that's a good thing, since they provide viable alternatives to the Apple iPad, which has dominated the tablet market since its first release in early 2010. One of the major benefits of Android over the iPad, is that instead of a single hardware choice, you can access the OS on a number of tablets from various manufacturers, in different sizes, with varied designs.

The only hitch: There isn't a single version of Android. The latest iteration, 5.0 "Lollipop," brings a complete visual overhaul and plenty of new features to get excited about. It's the best Android yet, and you can get it on Google's own Nexus devices, but it's still not widely available on other manufacturers' tablets. Android has always had notorious problems with timely OS updates.

Still, even if you don't have the latest OS iteration—or an Android variation à la Amazon Kindle Fire—Android continues to be the most configurable tablet operating system you'll find. It's a master multitasker with an excellent notification system, and top-notch integration with Google services like Gmail, Hangouts, and Google Maps. There still aren't as many tablet-specific apps as you'll find for the iPad, but that's changing.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

With a trim build and a gorgeous screen, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 has supremely elegant hardware, making it worth the premium price.

Nvidia Shield Tablet

Nvidia's gaming-oriented Shield Tablet is one of the first mobile devices to use the Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, and in sheer power, it blows other tablets out of the water.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2

The Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2's full HD display and unique design are rarities in this price range, making it a great choice for entry-level Android tablets.

Fuhu Nabi Big Tab HD 24"

The gargantuan Fuhu Nabi Big Tab HD offers both a collaborative, kid-safe Android experience and all-in-one connected media chops.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5

The Galaxy Tab S 10.5 is the best large screen Android-powered media tablet available, but it's not the best tablet you can buy.

Amazon Fire HD 6

The Amazon Fire HD 6 is a well-built, reliable small-screen tablet for under $100, but it really suffers from a lack of storage.

Amazon Fire HDX 8.9" (2014)

Amazon's Fire HDX 8.9" is the best value tablet for media out there, but its ecosystem doesn't match up to other operating systems for general-purpose use.

Dell Venue 8 (2014)

While it won't win any speed awards, the Dell Venue 8's full HD display and low price make it a good value for multimedia tablets.

Google Nexus 9

The Nexus 9 is a well-built Android tablet with a powerful processor, and it'll always be the first to get the latest Google OS updates.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro

The projector-packing Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 Pro excels as a self-contained home theater, but questionable Android software tweaks and performance issues hamper the experience.
