Symantec Norton Security Premium

Norton Security Premium's main window features plenty of whitespace and five panels corresponding to five major security areas. Clicking a panel slides down the green midline to reveal additional features related to that panel's subject.

Out of the box, Norton has a default backup set defined for you. You can accept and activate it, go through and make changes, or create additional backup sets.

By default, Norton backs up six essential file types for eachuser account. It omits backing up videos and the files representing email boxes due to their size, but you can enable these if desired. You can also add other file types for backup.

Your Norton subscription comes with 25GB of online storage for your backups. You can also choose any local, removable, or network drive, or any cloud storage service that appears as a drive in Windows Explorer.

Out of the box, Norton backs up any new or changed files whenever the computer is idle. You can optionally set a weekly or monthly schedule, but the idle-time scan is the best for keeping your backups current.

Restoring files from backup is likewise simple. Choose to restore all files or specific files, and choose whether to restore them to their original locations or a new location. That's it!

Norton keeps up to 10 previous versions of your backed-up files. So, for example, if you regret the edits you made on Monday, you can roll back to the document version from Friday.

All configuration of Norton Family Premier takes place online. You install a small local agent on each device used by a child, to enforce the house rules.

From the online configuration portal you can also view all activity by each child, or the just activity from a specific device.

When Norton blocks a site, it gives the child an option to ask a parent for permission. While the content filter works in any browser, as seen here, advanced features like filtering HTTPS content require a browser extension that's available for Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer.

From the Norton Family mobile app, your child can view a straightforward list of just what the parental control system can do.

On an Android device, a parent can log in to the app in parent mode for full control of configuration and full access to reports.
