LastPass

You access your LastPass passwords and other items via the LastPass Vault online. Your items appear in the middle, between a left-rail menu and an advertisement for LastPass Family.

After you set up a new LastPass account, the browser extension offers to walk you through saving your password for Google, Facebook, Amazon, or Netflix.

When LastPass detects you've logged in to a secure site, it offers to save your credentials. You can just click Add, or choose the Edit option, seen here, to add the item and assign it to a new or existing folder.

New since our last review, LastPass lets you store 13 more types of personal data, among the passport and driver's license information.

Each of the new item types comes with a detailed collection of data fields. In some cases, we found these data fields to be unnecessarily complex, as with the Wi-Fi Password type seen here.

When you create a new account, or open a password change page, LastPass offers to generate a random password for you. You can also invoke the password generator from the toolbar button's menu.

You can assign one or more trusted associates to receive your passwords in the event of your demise. When the associate requests access, you receive a notification. If you don't revoke access before the waiting period passes, the associate gets access to your passwords.

Clicking the LastPass icon (seen in the Title field here) brings up a menu of available personal data items. You can also right-click in any field to fill a particular field from any of your available items.

To secure your LastPass data, you can enable any of several two-factor authentication apps, including LastPass Authenticator.

When LastPass Authenticator is enabled as a second authentication factor, you get a notification on your mobile device after entering the master password. Just tap Allow to complete the login process.

The Security Challenge reports an overall security score, your standing among all LastPass users, and a master password score. You can (and should) raise your score by changing weak and duplicate passwords.

LastPass can automatically update passwords for about 80 popular sites, among them PayPal and Facebook. You can click a button to launch other sites and change the password manually.
