Yahoo is relaunching its core mobile app as Yahoo Newsroom—a Flipboard-like program that lets users discover, share, and discuss content.

Newsroom, available now in the App Store or Google Play, is a happy-medium between passively skimming Facebook friends' links and reading breaking news without any interaction. Sign into your Yahoo account to start exploring topics, or "Vibes," as Yahoo calls them. The more subjects you select, the more individualized your news feed will become, adjusting to include stories and conversations that matter most to you.

Users can also post articles from around the Web directly into specific Vibes, adding their own reactions to the story. People with similar interests will then see those posts and be prompted to join the conversation.

"What's exciting about this experience is that it empowers our community of hundreds of millions of global users to participate in and help shape the conversation," Simon Khalaf, senior vice president of publisher products, wrote in a blog announcement.

The news comes several months after Verizon Communications announced plans to acquire Yahoo's "operating business" for approximately $4.83 billion in cash.
