Kaspersky Total Security offers nearly everything you could want in a security suite: Award-winning antivirus protection, a strong firewall, comprehensive parental control, local and online backup, file encryption, and more.

Main Window

Kaspersky Total Security's main window is very similar to that of Kaspersky Internet Security, the entry-level suite, with buttons for Password Manager and Backup added.

Content Filter

Your Total Security subscription includes a license for Kaspersky Safe Kids, a modern cross-device parental control system whose configuration happens on the My Kaspersky website. The content filter has the unusual ability to set a Warning status for categories. The child can go ahead and visit, with a warning that Kaspersky will notify parents.

Where Is My Child

Parents can use the online portal to get the location of a mobile device that's assigned to a child profile. Safe Kids also offers geofencing, with the unusual ability to define just when the child should be within the geofence.

Not Safe

A child trying to visit a site matching a blocked category gets a red light, and a note that the site is not safe. If the site has Warning status, you'd see a yellow light and a button to ignore the warning.

Password Manager

Kaspersky Password Manager handles the expected password capture and replay, with a browser toolbar button that lets you go right to your saved sites.

Personal Data

The password manager component can also fill web forms with personal data, though the number of data fields stored is relatively small.

What to Back Up

Creating a backup job starts with identifying what files to back up. You can choose one of four presets or create a custom file collection.

Back Up to Dropbox

Kaspersky doesn't offer hosted online backup the way some competitors do. The closest you can come is hooking it up to your own Dropbox account and storing backups there.

Easy to Restore

To restore files, you simply find them in a familiar tree-style display. Note that if necessary you can restore an earlier version of a file.

Data Protection

Click More Tools in the main window and select Data Protection to access the suite's encryption and file shredding features.

Vault Size

Unlike most competing products, Kaspersky starts by having you select the files you want to encrypt. It then proposes a vault size that holds those files, plus some spare space. As is typical, you can't change the vault size after creation.

File Shredder

Once you've put files into a vault, you must shred the originals for security. By default, the shredder overwrites data with zeroes and then with random bits, but you can choose from a collection of other techniques.

Clean and Optimize

The Clean and optimize page of tools includes everything from Kaspersky Internet Security plus a new one, Unused Data Cleaner.

Unused Data Cleaner

The Unused Data Cleaner quickly locates files and data items that you can probably do without, organizing them into three categories: strongly recommended, recommended, and available.
