What's your teenager staring at on her phone? Probably Snapchat.

As noted by USA Today, the ephemeral messaging service is a favorite among U.S. teens, according to a new survey from research firm Piper Jaffray. Among 6,500 kids surveyed, 28 percent said Snapchat was their favorite app, followed by 27 percent who pointed to Instagram.

That's a pretty big shift from fall, when Piper Jaffray reported that 33 percent of teens said they favored Instagram, versus 19 percent who preferred Snapchat.

With Snapchat and Instagram eating up most of these kids' time, the rest of the social media world struggles to keep up. Twitter accounted for only 18 percent, followed by Facebook (which lost its hold on teens years ago) at 17 percent; Tumblr's 2 percent put it in a distant fifth, according to USA Today.

Piper Jaffray did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

Apple, meanwhile, remains one of the hottest brands among millennials: Half of surveyed teens intend to upgrade to an iPad, while 13 percent said their next tablet will be the iPad mini. The more fiscally responsible among them are more likely to choose a slate powered by Android (14 percent) or Windows (19 percent).

And those tablets come in handy as a majority of teens watch videos on Netflix and YouTube (66 percent), as opposed to a traditional TV (26 percent).
