Most Galaxy Note 7 Owners Getting a Refund or iPhone

Just 18 percent of Note 7 owners recently surveyed said they plan to stick with the phone.

Turns out, not even the lure of $25 can get people to stick with a phone that has a history of exploding.

More than a third of Galaxy Note 7 owners recently surveyed said they plan to get a refund, according to SurveyMonkey. Over the weekend, the site polled 507 America adults who own the phone, and found that 35 percent would seek a refund while 26 percent plan to switch to an iPhone instead.

Another 21 percent polled by Survey Monkey said they would opt for a different Samsung phone like the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge, according to USA Today. That leaves just 18 percent who said they plan to stick with the Note 7 once replacement handsets are available later this week.

Meanwhile, if you figured it was pretty much inevitable that this whole exploding smartphone gaffe would lead to lawsuits, you were right. A Florida man on Friday sued Samsung, claiming he suffered severe burns on his leg and hand after his Note 7 exploded in his front pants pocket, according to Reuters.

The lawsuit by Jonathan Strobel is the first we've heard of in the US over the Note 7 battery defect issue, but others are sure to follow. Strobel is seeking unspecified damages for "medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other alleged injuries," Reuters said.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission last week said Samsung has received 92 reports of batteries overheating in the US, including 26 incidents that resulted in people getting burned and 55 cases of property damage, including fires in cars and a garage.

A Samsung spokeswoman did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment about the suit. When contacted by Reuters, a spokeswoman said "We don't comment on pending litigation. We are urging all Note 7 owners to power their device down and exchange it immediately."

Note 7 owners have a few choices: exchange their current Note 7 for another Note 7 once it's available or exchange the Note 7 for the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge; Samsung will give customers a $25 gift card to those who take advantage of either option. Major US carriers, meanwhile, are also giving Note 7 owners the option of swapping their Note 7 for a different smartphone entirely, Samsung or not. Those who are fed up entirely can also just get a full refund.

The Technology I Use

My little Florida beach bungalow is brimming with smart home tech. I have a smart speaker or display in every room, allowing me to control other connected devices by voice. The Nest Hub on my bedside table lets me set wake-up alarms, control my smart light bulbs, and set the temperature on my smart thermostat. I use the Amazon Echo Show 8 on my kitchen counter to browse recipes, reorder protein powder, check the weather, and watch the news while I do dishes. 

Because I suffer from allergies, air purifiers are essential. My favorite model is the Dyson Purifier Cool TP07, which doubles as a fan and continuously sends indoor pollution data to its companion mobile app. 

My pitbull Bradley sheds, so a good robot vacuum is a must. I currently use a premium Ecovacs Deebot that can both vacuum and mop, empty its own dustbin, and wash its own mop cloth. 

For fitness, I like to mix up my routine with cycling, indoor rowing, running, and strength training in addition to yoga. I take classes on the Tonal 2 smart strength training machine, I row indoors on an Aviron machine, and track my beach runs with an Apple Watch while listening to music on my Apple AirPods Pro. On the weekends, I love riding e-bikes like the rugged, beach-friendly Aventon Aventure for fun and fitness.

My job involves a lot of virtual meetings, so a quality webcam, microphone, and ring light are important. I use the Jabra PanaCast 20 webcam, the Elgato Wave: 3 microphone, and a Yesker tripod ring light. 

As for my preferred phone platform, I'm an iPhone person, but I've also extensively used Android for product testing.
