Compact smartphones have all but disappeared from the flashy flagship spotlight, but among mid-range and entry-level devices, phones under 5 inches continue to thrive. The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime on Verizon Wireless ($144; 8GB) is a 4.5-inch device that boasts strong voice calls and a comfortable form factor. Unfortunately, scarce internal storage and heavy bloatware limit its usability. If calls and a handful of apps are all you need, then the Core Prime will do just fine. Otherwise, you're better off with the aging Motorola Droid Mini or the prepaid Motorola Moto E.

Design, Display, and Features

The Galaxy Core Prime looks like a shrunken Galaxy S4. It has the same capacitive Home button and camera lens layout, as well as the same metallic-looking frame and sturdy polycarbonate build. The device measures 5.15 by 2.67 by 0.35 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.59 ounces. It's lighter and more slender than the Moto E (5.11 by 2.63 by 0.48 inches; 5.11 ounces), but a bit bigger than the Droid Mini (4.78 by 2.41 by 0.35 inches; 4.59 ounces). Pocketability and one-handed use are a breeze thanks to the phone's compact dimensions.
