Sony Ericsson on Sunday confirmed the existence of its long-rumored "PlayStation Phone," - now dubbed the Xperia Play - via a Super Bowl ad.

"The smartphone with everything you need and the one thing you want," a voice says at the end of the one-minute ad.

Sony Ericsson said the phone is "coming soon," but did not elaborate. The company is holding a press conference on Sunday, February 13 in Barcelona before the start of Mobile World Congress, so expect more details then.

The ad takes place in dark room off a back alley where a man appears to be operating on someone. He eventually starts to pull gauze off the patient's hands, and we see that he has attached thumbs to the green Google Android character. The Android makes his way to the street, thumbs attached, apparently ready to start gaming on the Android-based Xperia Play phone.

Rumors about a PlayStation phone have been making the rounds for months. In late October, Sony seemingly confirmed its existence during a conference call with English-speaking analysts when it commented on the phone and tablet space, and warned about softness in 3D TVs. Analysts later told PCMag that they thought the phone was real.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
