PCMag Editors did not test the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition. We did, however, test and review the HP Envy 14-1210NR (4 stars) from the same series.

A laptop with Beats audio built in, the HP Envy 14 Beats Edition ($1,049.99 list) offers a 2nd generation Intel Core i5-2410M processor at 2.3 GHz, a 14.5-inch LED-backlit LCD at 1,366 by 768 resolution among other features. Other features like a dedicated AMD Radeon video card with switchable graphics, an 8-cell lithium-ion battery and a red backlit keyboard.

Design and Features
The Envy 14 Beats Edition features an all-black plastic chassis with the Beats logo adorned on its lid in red. Its face sports a similar design, with a, chiclet-style, backlit keyboard. Just above the LED-backlit LCD, users will find an embedded Skype-certified 720p HD webcam. A slot-loaded SuperMulti DVD optical drive sits in its side, as well as a multi-format media card reader. Other inputs include three USB ports (one eSATA/USB combo), HDMI out, a mini-DisplayPort and more.

Crack open this notebook to reveal a 1GB Radeon HD 6630 with DDR3 video memory, a 640GB hard drive running at 7,200 rpm and 6GB of DDR3 memory at 1,333MHz. The Core i5-2410M can be soft-overclocked to 2.9GHz using Intel Turbo Boost. Users can connect to the Internet and other devices through its RJ-45 Ethernet port, embedded 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi or built-in Bluetooth.

The Envy 14 Beats Edition, of course, features Beats audio, which has been engineered to reproduce audio quality found in recording studios from the highs to the lows and mid-ranges. And with its 8-cell lithium-ion battery, this 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium notebook is said to last for up to six hours.

My Experience

After starting my career at PCMag as an intern more than a decade ago, I’m back as one of its editors, focused on managing laptops, desktops, and components coverage. With 15 years of experience, I have been on staff and published in technology review publications, including PCMag (of course!), Laptop Magazine, Tom’s Guide, TechRadar, and IGN. Along the way, I’ve tested and reviewed hundreds of laptops and helped develop testing protocols. I have expertise in testing all forms of laptops and desktops using the latest tools. I’m also well-versed in video game hardware and software coverage.

The Technology I Use

I have ebbed and flowed between Windows-based and Apple hardware and software throughout my life. My first computer was a hand-me-down Apple IIe with the green screen and spool printer. I soon learned Windows with a—yes, hand-me-down—Packard Bell.

Today, I prefer macOS to Windows for its more straightforward integration with the phone I use (an iPhone) and simpler keyboard shortcuts and file management. Also, the hardware and performance are always top-notch, especially with the latest MacBook designs. (Windows, admittedly, still has better multi-window management.)

As for gaming, I’m a Nintendo fan first, a retro gamer second, and a PC gamer third. Expertise aside, it’s a matter of time and preference—not to mention the lack of space I’m willing to give up for a gaming PC in my home.

Finally, I love 3D-printing new miniatures for the tabletop war games that I enjoy playing. I currently use an AnkerMake M5C filament printer to great effect, and I have probably printed more than 100 models between two armies of dwarfs and elves.
