The Dell Streak will be available Aug. 13, the company announced Tuesday.

Users will be able to place pre-orders for the device on Aug. 12 at dell.com/mobile, and they will start shipping the following day. It retails for $299.99 with a two-year AT&T contract, or $549.99 without one.

Dell unveiled the Android-based Streak in May. Though it is being marketed as a tablet, it only boasts a five-inch screen and is capable of making phone calls, so it is really more like a large smartphone. The Streak also includes built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and available 3G, which will handle e-mail, texting, instant messages, and voice calls.

The device will launch with Android 1.6. After some hands-on time with the Streak, PCMag mobile analyst Sascha Segan found the software to be a major drawback. It could not run top-of-the-line games, lacked enough GPS software options, and could only handle limited video formats. It also repeatedly dropped calls and had poor Microsoft Exchange support. An upgrade to Android 2.2 will likely alleviate these issues.

Still, the device is slim and well-built, has a roomy screen, and a fast 1-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

Customers who pre-order the device will receive a coupon that includes free, two-day shipping, and a Plantronics Bluetooth earpiece for 99 cents.

The Streak will initially be available in standard graphite, though Dell plans to release a cherry red version in the future.

Editor's Note: This story was updated to clarify that the Streak is available online only, not in stores.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
