Apple has reportedly released version 4.1 of its iOS software. Early reports said Wednesday that the software alters the way in which Apple's iPhones report signal strength, but doesn't affect dropped calls.

The beta is supposed to be for developers only.

MacRumors reported that the signal bars are slightly taller, and the modem software has been updated from 02.07.01 from 01.59.00. Anecdotal reports don't seem to indicate that the new OS version fixes any problems beyond that, however.

Apple has said previously that the company's "death grip" antenna issues were the result of a imprecise AT&T signal algorithm, and that they would be fixed in a subsequent release. Several sources, including PCMag.com and Consumer Reports, have called on Apple to fix the phone.

Microsoft chief executive Kevin Turner told his company's partners on Wednesday that the iPhone 4 could be Apple's Microsoft Vista.
