Turns out the retailers were right after all.

A day after Amazon.com and other retailers began posting links - and the price - of the Microsoft Kinect, Microsoft confirmed the price at its online store.

Gamers can preorder the Kinect for $149.99. Microsoft did not announce any bundles with the peripheral, which uses technology developed by PrimseSense to sense who the user is, and where he is located. Kinect then uses the locations of his or her arms and legs to serve as controllers. PrimeSense also said that its technology may appear in laptops and TVs in the future.

Kinect will be Microsoft's answer to the Sony PlayStation Move, the rival technology used by the Sony PlayStation.

Inside the Kinect box, Microsoft will include the Kinect sensor, a power-supply cable, the user's manual, and the Wi-Fi extension cable.

From a specifications standpoint, the Kinect sports a 640-by-480, 30-fps camera; plus four array microphones that support single-speaker voice recognition.

When contacted for comment on Monday night, a Microsoft representative would say only "We haven't yet announced pricing details for Kinect. Stay tuned."

Microsoft hasn't announced pricing for "Kinect Adventures" and "Kinect Sports," two games that take advantage of the Kinect hardware. Amazon has priced both at $59.99.
