iOS 4 may be just a few hours old, but several developers are already rolling out versions of their iPhone and iPod Touch apps for the new OS. Most of the updates we've seen so far just ensure compatibility, or enable fast app switching. But a few, most notably Pandora, enable iOS 4's most wanted feature: multitasking.

Click through to our slideshow to see 10 iOS 4 apps that you can download right now. As you find more, add them to the comments below!

Pandora Radio
Version 3.1 of the popular streaming radio app Pandora supports multitasking, so music keeps playing even while you're doing other things on the phone.

iBooks
As promised, Apple's flagship e-reader app is now available for iPhone and iPod touch devices. It also supports reading PDFs and bookmarking pages.

Zagat To Go
The popular restaurant-rating app has just been updated to version 3.1.2 for iOS 4, including fast task switching, calendar integration, and high-res graphics on the iPhone 4.

Guitar Hero
Guitar Hero fans can rock out without fear, because the current version 0.9.0 has been tested and shown to work on the new iOS 4.

Tweetaholic
Version 1.0.2 of the Twitter client Tweetaholic lets you upload photos and refresh timelines in the background, without sitting there waiting for your photo server to respond.

FlightTrack Pro
FlightTrack Pro version 3.5 syncs the flights you're tracking with your iPhone's calendar when you're using iOS 4; it also lets you send SMS messages from the app.

Alarm Clock Pro
Versions of the popular alarm clock app before the current 1.0.9 don't work properly on iOS 4, so you must download the updated version to make sure you keep waking up on time.

Pocket Universe
Version 2.1 of this virtual astronomy app supports fast task switching and has updated, higher resolution graphics for the new iPhone 4's retina display.

ConvertBot
This popular unit conversion app just got iOS 4 compatibility, including fast task switching, but the release notes for Version 1.5.3 don't show any additional new features.

ReMovem
This simple bubble-popping game gets "better compatibility with iOS 4" in the new version 1.5.1.

Incognito Browser
A Safari skin that enables private browsing with no history or saved cookies, Incognito Browser's new version 1.1 was tested and shown to work with iOS 4.0.

My Experience

I'm that 5G guy. I've actually been here for every "G." I reviewed well over a thousand products during 18 years working full-time at PCMag.com, including every generation of the iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy S. I also wrote a weekly newsletter, Fully Mobilized, where I obsessed about phones and networks.

My Areas of Expertise

  • US and Canadian mobile networks
  • Mobile phones released in the US
  • iPads, Android tablets, and ebook readers
  • Mobile hotspots
  • Big data features such as Fastest Mobile Networks and Best Work-From-Home Cities

The Technology I Use

Being cross-platform is critical for someone in my position. In the US, the mobile world is split pretty cleanly between iOS and Android. So I think it's really important to have Apple, Android and Windows devices all in my daily orbit.

I use a Lenovo ThinkPad Carbon X1 for work and a 2021 Apple MacBook Pro for personal use. My current phone is a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, although I'm probably going to move to an Android foldable. Most of my writing is either in Microsoft OneNote or a free notepad app called Notepad++. Number crunching, which I do often for those big data stories, is via Microsoft Excel, DataGrip for MySQL, and Tableau.

In terms of apps and cloud services, I use both Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive heavily, although I also have iCloud because of the three Macs and three iPads in our house. I subscribe to way too many streaming services.

My primary tablet is a 12.9-inch, 2020-model Apple iPad Pro. When I want to read a book, I've got a 2018-model flat-front Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. My home smart speakers run Google Home, and I watch a TCL Roku TV. And Verizon Fios keeps me connected at home.

My first computer was an Atari 800 and my first cell phone was a Qualcomm Thin Phone. I still have very fond feelings about both of them.
