Google has teamed up with the rock band OK Go to get students excited about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Together, they just unveiled the OK Go Sandbox, a collection of free design challenges, guides, worksheets, and other materials for K-12 teachers. Created in collaboration with Dr. AnnMarie Thomas, head of the Playful Learning Lab at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, and Google's Science Journal team, these resources leverage OK Go's music videos to teach STEM concepts.

In their video for "Needing/Getting," for instance, the band turns a car into a musical instrument. Using resources in the OK Go Sandbox, teachers can explore similar concepts in the classroom, challenging their students to "discover the musical qualities of various everyday objects and put them to use." In a Thursday blog post, OK Go frontman Damian Kulash said he's heard from a number of educators over the years who have used the band's music videos in their classrooms. To create this new resource, the band and Thomas set up a survey asking educators for their ideas and received "nearly a thousand" responses in a few days.

"Whether we're exploring frame rates by making flip books, or using a light sensor to make music … we hope that the challenges in the OK Go Sandbox help stoke curiosity and encourage learning through joy and wonder," Kulash wrote.

Meanwhile, the launch of OK Go Sandbox comes at a perfect time as March happens to be Music in Our Schools Month. To celebrate the occasion, Google also recently launched a neat browser-based tool that lets anyone become a musician. Dubbed Song Maker, the tool lets you easily make music through fun experiments and share your creations with friends.
