We have no idea why Tide Pods are a thing—beyond laundry, that is. They make a lot of sense if you need to wash your dirty clothes. They make a lot less sense if you're hungry for a snack, but as numerous publications have reported recently, the "Tide Challenge" is an actual thing. Real people are going to real hospitals for eating Tide Pods and accidentally eating portions of a Tide Pod when making joke videos about eating Tide Pods.

As Time reported last week, there were 39 reported cases of teenagers intentionally ingesting Tide Pods within the first two weeks of 2018. That equals the number of cases reported for all teenagers during the entire year of 2016.
In an effort to keep this "fad" from becoming more of an issue than it already is, Tide parent company Procter & Gamble has taken to social media to warn about the dangers of putting Tide Pods in your mouth.

The company is also working to get videos of the "Tide Pod Challenge" removed from various social media sites.

"YouTube's Community Guidelines prohibit content that's intended to encourage dangerous activities that have an inherent risk of physical harm. We work to quickly remove flagged videos that violate our policies," reads YouTube's statement.
Facebook is also removing Tide Pod Challenge videos. A spokesperson recently told CNN that "we don't allow the promotion of self-injury and will remove it when we're made aware of it."
