Dell's newest XPS 13 laptop brings new technology and eye-catching color schemes to shoppers starting today.

The XPS lineup is known for its premium carbon fiber and metal build, which continues with this iteration. The most visible addition to the high-end ultraportable, however, is the white and rose gold color option, another example of what seems to be a returning trend of white laptops.

The white glass fiber finish is stain resistant, made to fend off yellowing and markings, but you can also get the new laptop in a black and silver color scheme.

Dell XPS 13 (2018)

The new XPS 13 is thinner, lighter, and smaller than the previous model (24 percent decrease by volume), and is available now starting at $999.99 with multiple configuration options.

That includes Intel's eighth-generation processors. You can opt for an i5 or an i7, both of which include four cores for improved multitasking and media performance. There's a new internal thermal solution centered around a dual heat pipe and fan solution to keep the increased power running cool in a slimmer chassis.

The 13.3-inch display is available in two resolutions, either HD (1,920 by 1,080) or 4K (3,840 by 2,160). Both are InfinityEdge designs, meaning razor-thin bezels (4mm thick), while only the 4K version is a touch display. The 4K model also boasts 100 percent sRGB coverage and a 1,500:1 contrast ratio. All screen types are covered edge-to-edge with Corning Gorilla Glass 4. Screen resolution influences battery life, so Dell claims up to 19 hours with the HD screen and 11 hours on the 4K model.

Storage comes in the form of an SSD, which you can order in a 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB capacity. Ports include two USB-C ports with Thunderbolt 3 ports, another USB-C port, and a microSD slot. All three USB-C ports are capable of DisplayPort connection for external displays. The power button has a built-in fingerprint reader.

My Experience

I’ve been a consumer PC expert at PCMag for 10 years, and I love PC gaming. I've played games on my computer for as long as I can remember, which eventually (as it does for many) led me to build and upgrade my own desktops to this day. Through my years at PCMag, I've tested and reviewed many, many dozens of laptops and desktops, and I am always happy to recommend a PC for your needs and budget.

The Technology I Use

The single piece of technology I use the most (by far!) is my self-built desktop. I spend a lot of my time gaming (and now, working) on this system, and I’m likely to continue upgrading it in some form forever. As it relates to my work at PCMag, it’s a vital window into keeping up to date with components, performance, and the latest titles. On the smartphone front, I’m a full-time Android user.

I’m always eyeing my next GPU upgrade, but the consistent part of my gaming setup has been a 165Hz 1440p monitor; I think this remains the sweet spot for the time being. A dual-monitor setup has been essential for work and play; my second screen is either a productivity monitor, playing videos for entertainment, or being used for console gaming, depending on the time of day.

Speaking of which, I may be primarily a PC gamer, but (like any good gaming enthusiast without enough discipline) I also own a PlayStation 5, an Xbox Series S, a Steam Deck, and a Nintendo Switch 2. The PS5 and Xbox are hooked up to a living-room television for a more laid-back couch experience; I've found Gamepass to be especially handy for cooperative play and for taking my saved-game files from my desk to my couch through the cloud.
