Do you find yourself reminiscing about the bygone era when Nokia was the king of the cell phone market? You might soon be able to scratch that itch.
HMD Global, the Finnish company that now owns the Nokia brand, on Monday announced plans to launch its Nokia 6 handset in the US next month via Amazon. The 5.5-inch handset will be available in matte black and silver in early July for $229. Later this summer, blue and copper versions will be available.
"It brings us great pleasure to introduce a new generation of US fans to Nokia phones, while offering existing fans the same unparalleled and high-quality Nokia phone experience they have come to love over the years," HMD Global Vice President Maurizio Angelone said in a statement. "The Nokia 6 exemplifies our commitment to best-in-class performance, design, and craftsmanship, and we are proud to offer American consumers a smartphone option that will not require them to sacrifice quality for cost."
First announced in February, the Nokia 6 runs the latest version of Android, Nougat, and features an aluminum unibody design with a full HD screen, plus a 16MP camera on the back and 8MP front-facing shooter. The camera features a dual-tone flash which allows for "natural colors and skin tones indoors and out," HMD said.
The Nokia 6 is powered by the lower-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 mobile platform coupled with 3GB of RAM. Other specs include 32GB of internal memory (plus a MicroSD card slot that supports up to 128GB), a 3,000 mAh battery, and dual speakers with Dolby Atmos technology.
HMD is really playing up the phone's design, saying that the shell is "crafted from a single block of 6000-series aluminium," which takes 55 minutes to create, and is then polished "no less than five times."
"The end result is an aluminium unibody with the highest level of visual and structural quality," the company boasts.
PCMag's sister site in India said the Nokia 6 "felt better than the OnePlus 3T in terms of build quality," but is almost half the price. They also noted that "the phone felt plenty responsive" despite its processor.
