Samsung will reportedly add a pressure-sensitive screen and high-speed charging port to its next-gen smartphone.

Citing "people familiar with the matter," The Wall Street Journal said Samsung is also eyeing a retina scanner.

Likely to be dubbed the Galaxy S7, the new 5.2-inch handset is expected to debut alongside a 5.7-inch curved-screen model, called the Galaxy S7 Edge. Both will largely resemble their predecessors, the Journal reported.

Samsung declined to comment on the rumors.

Rumors about Samsung's next-gen phones have been making the rounds. In October, AndroidHeadlines.com tipped an iPhone-like force-touch feature, based on a patent application for a "Touch Input Apparatus."

Another report in November suggested the microSD slot will return on the S7, after it was pulled from this year's Galaxy S6 and Note 5.

Other rumored Galaxy S7 features include a 20-megapixel rear-facing camera and a USB-C connector (to allow for high-speed charging), as well as a Samsung Exynos 8890 or Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor.

There is no word on exactly when consumers can expect a new Samsung gadget, though the Journal reported a mid-March debut—following the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, where the Galaxy S6 was revealed last year.

There is a lot riding on this launch. While Samsung remains the world's top handset maker, the company's smartphone business has been in decline amidst pressure from China-based competitors, as well as Apple.
