Mozilla's Firefox browser is now available for iOS users worldwide.

Whether you surf the Web on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, Mozilla's app can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store.

Firefox for iOS"Firefox for iOS lets you take your favorite browser with you wherever you go with the Firefox features you already love," Firefox Vice President of Product Nick Nguyen wrote in a blog post.

That includes smart and flexible search, with automatic suggestions that anticipate your search. Plus, Visual Tabs make it easy to manage multiple tabs on the same screen, and Private Browsing promises not to save history or share cookies.

Version 1.1 also lets users transfer existing browser history, passwords, and tabs from the desktop to an iDevice.

The launch has been a long time coming. In early 2013, Mozilla said it had no plans to release Firefox for iOS—until Apple adjusted its attitude toward third-party browsers. Former Senior Vice President of Product Jay Sullivan said at the time that "the organization doesn't feel like it can build the browser it wants to for Apple's platform."

Less than two years later, the software maker said it was testing an early version of a Firefox app for iOS. And in early September, Mozilla launched its first public preview of Firefox for iOS in New Zealand, gathering feedback ahead of this week's global launch.

Now, anyone running iOS 8.2 or later can add the new app to their home screen for quick browsing.

"This is only the beginning and I'm proud of the team that has worked so hard to make this happen," Nguyen said. "I hope you enjoy the first ever release of Firefox for iOS."

Mozilla this week also announced a new Yahoo Search experience for U.S. Firefox users. The redesigned engine—accessible via the Firefox Awesome bar on Windows, Mac, and Linux—features answers, images, and videos for easy browsing. Last year, Mozilla dumped Google and made Yahoo its default search engine.
