Apple today announced a new record: 13 million iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models sold in the three days since their launch.

That number is expected to grow, as the handsets become available in more than 40 additional countries next week, reaching 130-plus countries by the end of the year.

"Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple's history," CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

Apple unveiled its new iPhones earlier this month in San Francisco, and they arrived in stores on Friday. While they look nearly identical to the previous iPhone models, the next-gen smartphones feature a higher-end processor, as well as 3D Touch and the Live Photos features.

The camera also got an upgrade, from 8 megapixels to 12 megapixels; there's also a 5-megapixel FaceTime HD camera, and the new phones can capture 4K videos.

Apple is also offering a new iPhone Upgrade Program: For $32 per month ($37 for Plus models), customers are guaranteed the newest handset each year—plus AppleCare—with the purchase of an unlocked version at the Apple Store.

"Customers' feedback is incredible and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos, and we can't wait to bring [the smartphones] to even more customers in even more countries on Oct. 9," Cook said.

Next up: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, the Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Maldives, Mexico, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Taiwan.

On Oct. 10, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will be able to buy the latest iPhones.

Apple's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launched last year, setting the all-time record for launch-weekend sales at 10 million. That was due, in part, to Apple embracing a larger form factor: its iPhone 6 expanded from 4 inches to 4.7 inches, and it introduced the 5.5-inch 6 Plus.
