Google's first update for its Android Wear platform gives its smartwatches a little independence from the smartphone.

Starting today, Android Wear users can ditch the smartphone during a run or bike ride, and still keep track of data like route, distance, and speed. The operating system now supports watches with GPS sensors, so you can leave the phone at home without losing vital information.

The same goes for music, which can be stored on your watch and listened to via Bluetooth headphones.

"If you have a watch with GPS, you can try today's new features with apps like Golfshot and MyTracks," Android Wear product manager Kenny Stoltz suggested in a blog post. "And if you want to rock out directly from your wrist, just grab the latest version of Google Play Music."

Those who are still mulling a smartwatch purchase can now pre-order the Sony SmartWatch 3 (pictured) for $249.99 via Verizon. Expected to hit shelves by the end of the month, the latest-generation SmartWear device will come pre-loaded with the updated Android Wear.

The SmartWatch 3 sports with a 1.6-inch 320-by-320 TFT LCD Transflective display, held in place by a stainless steel back panel. Sony first introduced the Smartwatch 3 at the IFA trade show in September, where PCMag's Alex Colon found it to be a "dramatic departure from the SmartWatch 2," thanks to Android Wear, "but an otherwise expected move forward for Sony."

"It's a pretty nice looking timepiece, with a stainless steel back panel that gives it a high-quality feel," he said. Check it out in the slideshow above.

Other Android Wear-based smartwatch owners shouldn't feel left out: The LG G Watch, the Samsung Gear Live, and the Moto 360 will all be updated to include the new features over the next few days, according to Stoltz.

Still want more? Google has revamped its Play store, adding eight new app collections—including fitness & health and travel—to make it easier to find the right apps for you.
