If history is any indication, the next version of Android is going to have a name that starts with M. But what will "Android M" include?
According to reports, we'll hear more about the so-called Android M at Google's annual I/O developer conference later this month. The Verge spotted a session description — which has since been removed from Google's I/O website — that made specific mention to "Android M."
"Sadly the I/O session descriptions don't offer too many details on what to expect; the 'Android at Work' session only says Android M 'brings [the] power of Android to all kinds of workplaces,'" the report notes, though that suggests Google may be planning to give Android even more business-focused features.
Other rumors suggest that the next version of Android might be built directly into new cars. In December, Reuters said Google's software could become the standard system that powers future cars' entertainment and navigation features — a huge step up from Android Auto, which requires an Android phone to be plugged in to access things like music, maps, and apps. Word has it that Google is planning to unveil the car plan when it rolls out Android M.
If Google does reveal Android M at I/O it wouldn't exactly be a shocker. After all, the Web giant used its developer conference last year to announce "Android L" a.k.a. Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Google I/O 2015 takes place on May 28 and 29 in San Francisco's Moscone Center West, so stay tuned.
Now onto the big question — what will the M stand for? Macaroon? Milkshake? Meringue? Muffin? Or could it be something more brand-specific like M&M's, Milk Duds, or Mounds?
