Meerkat is expanding its live video-streaming service to Android users.

Folks running the Google-based operating system can sign up online to join the Meerkat Android Beta program.

Enter your full name, Twitter handle, and email, and wait for an invitation.

"We're opening up Meerkat for Android to external beta testers!" the app maker tweeted on Wednesday.

A number of people responded with messages of thanks and excitement, saying that they've signed up and "can't wait" for the Android version to hit phones.

User Nicholas Bailey, however, is less enthusiastic, writing in response, "Stop trying to make Meerkat happen."

The surprise hit app, currently an iPhone exclusive, lets users stream live video from their phones to the rest of the Internet. It also uses Twitter to promote streams and connect users.

Shortly after its release, however, Meerkat was cut off from Twitter's social graph, making it harder for users to find each other and receive notifications when friends start a new stream. Meerkat later updated the app with new recommendations for people you might want to follow on the service, ways to follow other Meerkat users from within their streams, and new listings of other Meerkat streams that your friends also like.

Shortly thereafter, Twitter launched its own live-streaming app called Periscope, and last week there were reports that Twitter was trying to drum up more interest by asking celebrities to switch from Meerkat to Periscope.

A move into the Android platform, however, could give Meerkat an additional boost, allowing it to compete more readily with Twitter's iPhone-only service. Few details have been revealed about the Android Beta program; interested users can do little more than sign up online, and wait.
