JetBlue Preps Apple Pay in the Sky

JetBlue customers will soon be able to scan and tap their way to on-board purchases: The airline plans to be the first major U.S. domestic carrier to accept Apple Pay in the sky.

Fliers with an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus can use the Apple Pay service to purchase premium offerings, like EatUp snack boxes and a la carte food, premium beverages, onboard amenities, and "Even More Space" seating.

Those in line for the upcoming Apple Watch can enjoy the same luxuries.

JetBlue is no stranger to the high-tech world: It added in-flight Wi-Fi in the first quarter of 2013. Around the same time, the company jumped on the now-defunct Google Glass bandwagon, highlighting how the futuristic eyewear could help passengers better navigate airline travel.

"The sky is definitely not the limit when it comes to mobile payments with Apple Pay," Marty St. George, senior vice president of commercial operations at JetBlue, said in a statement. "Customers want an easy and fast transaction when they decide to make an on-board purchase so that they can get back to enjoying their flight."

Apple Pay will begin appearing on select JetBlue transcontinental flights—from New York to Los Angeles and San Francisco—in mid-February. The mobile payment feature will expand to more flights next month, with all JetBlue trips accepting Apple Pay by June.

Just ask an inflight crewmember if the service is available.

By the end of the year, users will also be able to use Apple Pay to complete purchases in JetBlue's mobile iOS app.

Passengers aren't the only ones getting an upgrade: JetBlue will issue iPad minis and NFC-enabled cases (with Apple Pay compatibility) to more than 3,500 crewmembers. Each tablet will come loaded with the custom-designed Inflight Service Assistant app, which gives attendants access to the customer manifest and flight data.

"JetBlue has always stood out because our crewmembers care about our customers," executive vice president of customer care, Joanna Geraghty, said. "By giving crewmembers thoughtful ways to use technology, we can support an even more personalized onboard experience with a perfect partnership of high tech and high touch."
