In advance of Mobile World Congress, Samsung last night sent invitations to its Unpacked event, which is expected to include the launch of its flagship Galaxy S6 smartphone.
Set for March 1 in Barcelona, the presentation begins at 6:30 p.m. CET (12:30 p.m. EST) and will be live-streamed on Samsung's YouTube channel.
While the South Korean tech giant remained mum about what it will be "unpacking," the media has its sights set on the next-generation Galaxy S6 handset. The invitation's bowed shadow also hints at a curved handset, similar to the Galaxy Round or Galaxy Note Edge (slideshow below).
In November, reports suggested that Samsung was starting from scratch on the S6 in order to compete with Apple. Of course, similar rumors sprung up ahead of Samsung's Galaxy S5 launch, which looked largely the same to its predecessor.
Still, rumors suggest the S6 will include a Quad HD, 2,560-by-1,440 display and the same IMX240 camera sensor used on the Note 4 . The front camera will get a bump up to 5 megapixels, while Samsung will reportedly drop the 16GB storage option in favor of 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities.
The company is also prepping a Snapdragon 810 model, in addition to an Exynos-equipped version packing a new Exynos 7420—a fully 64-bit chip with eight processor cores, according to a November report from Sammobile. It is also likely to run Android's new 5.0 Lollipop mobile OS, 3GB of RAM, and a new LTE model which Samsung designed itself.
Recent reports tipped a swipe-based fingerprint sensor—similar to the iPhone's Touch ID feature—integrated into Samsung's next-gen handset.
At last year's MWC, Samsung also revealed its Tizen-powered Gear 2 watches alongside the Galaxy S5.
