Following multiple quarters of loss, Nintendo appears to be bouncing back thanks to titles like Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS and Mario Kart 8 for Wii U.

Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors for the Wii U saw steady sales this quarter, Nintendo said. Worldwide sales of Wii U hardware and software were 1.12 million units and 9.4 million units, respectively.

The 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. , which arrived in Japan last month, sold 3.22 million units globally. Tomodachi Life launched in June and has 1.27 million unit sales thus far, with "steady sales" this quarter. Overall 3DS hardware and software sales were 2.09 million and 23.3 million units, respectively.

Nintendo will launch Super Smash Bros. for Wii U next month in the U.S., then in Japan and Europe in December. Fans can also look out for the accompanying NFC-enabled amiibo figures, which store game data.

"In addition to being attractive figures for consumers to collect, when amiibo figures are tapped on the Wii U GamePad, they offer fun new gaming experiences by affecting relevant software titles in various ways," Nintendo said.

The toys will be compatible with more games, and other consoles, in the future.

This week's earnings report marks Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata's first news conference appearance since his June surgery to remove a tumor in his bile duct, Reuters said.

"Of course it was a major illness and surgery, so compared to before, I may shorten the time I'm at work, or perhaps I may cut back on overseas business trips," Iwata told reporters. "But in terms of holding meetings, considering strategy, and speaking publicly, I believe I've recovered enough to work as I had before," Reuters reported.

Nintendo fans can also keep an eye out for a new Legend of Zelda game for Wii U, announced during this year's E3 gaming expo, and expected to debut next year.
