R.I.P. Nokia smartphone brand. Following Microsoft's $7.2 billion acquisition of Nokia's handset business, the software maker is transitioning to the new "Microsoft Lumia" moniker.

The rebranding will begin in France, where local social media accounts will adopt the "Microsoft Lumia" name.

"We are on the verge of becoming 'Microsoft Lumia'!" Nokia France posted on Facebook Tuesday, promising more details soon.

More countries will take the rebranding leap in the coming weeks, The Verge said.

The rebranding should come as no surprise: Former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, now executive vice president of the Microsoft Devices Group, announced in April that the handset business would get a new name once the Microsoft deal was complete.

Elop denied claims that it would be called Microsoft Mobile, which he said was a name created only to facilitate the merger. But until this week, it remained unclear what the official title would be.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment.

The move away from the Nokia name is likely intended to avoid confusion. Though it jettisoned its phone business, Nokia still exists, now with a focus on mapping and network infrastructure. The transition hasn't been smooth, exactly: Nokia intends to close a plant in India next week. The future of the factory, which employs some 20,000 people, was called into question during the sale to Microsoft. Workers went on strike, demanding that the Chennai plant be included in the purchase, but tax issues hampered the deal.
