Uh oh. Did Apple just spoil its own event?

Ahead of tomorrow's iPad event, an iPad user's guide for iOS 8 popped up online that appeared to show off Cupertino's next-gen iPads.

The iTunes listing was quickly updated to show the iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display, but for a time, it was showing off an iPad mini 3 and an iPad Air 2.

The image tipped some of the device's specs, including a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. Otherwise, they look very similar to their predecessors, as other updates will probably be internal: an upgraded chip and a longer-lasting battery, perhaps.

The photos of the new iPads showed up in the "iPad User Guide For iOS 8," an Apple-produced e-book available via its iBooks app. The earlier screenshots also tipped iOS 8.1, an upcoming update for the mobile OS that's expected next week.

Apple's iOS 8.1 is also expected to allow for Apple Pay in the new NFC-enabled iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

Apple's event kicks off at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET tomorrow, so check back for all the details. We'll reportedly also see an upgraded iMac, though no Retina MacBook Air.

My Experience

I started out covering tech policy in DC for The National Journal, where my beat included state-level tech news and all the congressional hearings and FCC meetings I could handle. I later covered Wall Street trading tech before switching gears to consumer tech. I now lead PCMag's news coverage.

My Areas of Expertise

Getting my start in DC means I still have a soft spot for tech policy; Congressional hearings can sometimes be as entertaining as a Bravo reality show, for better or worse. But PCMag is all about the technology we use every day, as well as keeping an eye out for the trends that will shape the industry in the years ahead (or flop on arrival). I've covered the rise of social media, the iOS vs. Android wars, the cord-cutting revolution that's now left us with hefty streaming bills, and the effort to stuff artificial intelligence into every product you could imagine. This job has taken me to CES in Vegas (one too many times), IFA in Berlin, and MWC in Barcelona. I also drove a Tesla 1,000 miles out west as part of our Best Mobile Networks project. Of late, my focus is on our hard-working team of reporters at PCMag, guiding and editing their robust coverage.
