Facebook is rolling out a new feature that allows users to see how many views a video posted to the social network has received.

Views will be displayed on public posts from people and Pages, and is intended to boost discovery of new and popular videos. They will show up next to the traditional likes and comments stats.

The company is also testing a "related videos" feature in its mobile apps, helping users to discover more broadcasts similar to the one they just watched. Facebook already provides "related stories" for those who open article links on their timeline.

"Video is one of the most engaging and immersive ways to tell your story," project management director Fidji Simo wrote in a blog post. "Whether capturing breaking news, a baby's first steps, or rising to a friend's challenge for charity, it is a remarkable storytelling medium."

That medium got a boost last year, when Facebook launched auto-play videos. Users in the U.S. and around the world now see recordings jolt to life while scrolling through the News Feed. All videos are muted by default, but a simple tap will launch sound and a full-screen view.

According to Simo, growth in video views exceeded 50 percent between May and July, and now averages more than 1 billion daily watches.

"Video on Facebook was built to be mobile first, and now more than 65 [percent] of video views are on mobile," Simo said. "And we're just getting started."

Facebook today also announced that it now has more than 100 million users in Africa, 80 percent of whom access the service on mobile, the Wall Street Journal reported.
