Sony reported a major boost to its quarterly results, thanks in large part to its console and motion picture divisions.

Between the next-gen PlayStation 4 that hit shelves in November, and soaring box-office numbers, the entertainment company posted a 5.8 percent revenue increase to $17.9 billion and net income of about $265 million.

Sales of PS4 hardware and software resulted in profit of $43 million for Sony's game and network services sector, compared to a $164 million loss during the same time period last year.

"This increase was primarily due to the contribution from sales of PS4 hardware, which was launched in November 2013, as well as a significant increase in network services revenues accompanying the launch of the PS4," Sony said, though it was "partially offset by a decrease in PlayStation 3 software sales."

Recent cost-cutting measures also helped Sony recoup some money this quarter; the company ditched its Vaio PC business and split its TV unit into a separate subsidy.

And with the little help of strong worldwide theatrical performances of movie sequels The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and 22 Jump Street, Sony Pictures saw a 23 percent year-over-year increase in sales, which reached $1.9 million in the three months ending June 30.

As PCMag sister site IGN pointed out, Microsoft's recent financial report for the same period revealed combined shipping figures of 1.1 million for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 consoles—meaning the PlayStation brand outsold Xbox three to one in the first quarter.

Game rival Nintendo, meanwhile, posted another quarterly loss, selling 510,000 Wii U units between April and June.

Sony on Wednesday announced today's launch of PlayStation Now open beta, available to all PS4 owners in the U.S. and Canada. Following the May closed beta, players will now see PS Now titles fully integrated into the PlayStation Store.
