Following an international rollout, Sony's new Xperia Z2 smartphone hit U.S. shelves this weekend.

But the device is only available off-contract through the Sony store for $699.99—and that's after a $50 discount.

But even if you're willing to shell out the big bucks for a new phone, you'll have to wait. According to the Sony site, the Z2 is currently backordered, and an exact ship date is unknown. Sony did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Interested customers can still pre-order the device—in black, purple, or white—and wait for Sony to restock.

Sony Xperia Z2The manufacturer showcased its newest Xperia line up at February's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where the Z2 smartphone and tablet were on display, alongside the midrange Xperia M2 handset.

Sporting a 5.2-inch "triluminos" display, the Z2 phone also packs a 20.7-megapixel camera and 4K camcorder, plus a 2.3GHz Qualcomm processor and Android 4.4.2 KitKat software.

Added perks include support for any noise-cancelling headphones, whether they're made by Sony, Bose, or another vendor.

The smartphone's 10.1-inch tablet counterpart, meanwhile, boasts a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor and Adreno 330 GPU, as well as the title of the slimmest and lightest waterproof slate.
