Harley-Davidson will begin revving its electric engines this week, as it kicks off a nationwide tour of Project LiveWire—the manufacturer's first electric motorcycle.

Stopping in more than 30 Harley-Davidson dealerships across the country, the Project LiveWire Experience begins tomorrow in New York City.

Local licensed motorcycle drivers can stop by the Harley-Davidson of New York dealership Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (4211 Northern Boulevard in Long Island City) to get a sneak peek at the hog, which is not yet available for sale to the public.

Riders are asked to take the test driver seriously, as future plans for the bike's retail availability will be influenced by user feedback during the tour.

Even those who can't take the hog for a spin can virtually have their hair blown back via the Jumpstart simulated riding experience.

From the Big Apple, the Project LiveWire crew will head north to Boston, where prospective buyers can test drive the motorcycle from June 27-29 at Boston Harley-Davidson (1760 Revere Beach Pkwy, Everett, MA). It will also be available at the Harley-Davidson Museum in Milwaukee from June 26-29. In total, the electric bikes will be on display in 30 cities; follow the Project LiveWire website for more details.

The new electric bike offers what the maker calls a "visceral" riding experience, complete with tire-shredding acceleration and a new sound.

"Think fighter jet on an aircraft carrier," chief marketing officer Mark-Hans Richer said last week, calling it "a distinct part of the thrill."

But don't suggest the chopper is just another electric vehicle on the road. "Project LiveWire is more like the first electric guitar—not an electric car," Richer said. "It's an expression of individuality and iconic style that just happens to be electric."
