For the second time in two days, the Feedly Web and mobile apps have been knocked offline by a denial of service attack.

The first invasion struck bright and early Wednesday, leaving users of the cloud-based service unable to access their favorite news feeds.

Around the same time, meanwhile, note-taking app Evernote suffered an attack that blocked the company's 100 million-plus users. Within a few hours, Evernote got back on its feet, though warned of "a hiccup or two" for the next day.

Feedly, however, was not as lucky. "We are currently being targeted by a second DDoS attack and are working with our service providers to mitigate the issue," the company wrote just before 10:30 a.m. ET today.

But users shouldn't worry, according to marketing director Josh Catone, who promised that, "as with yesterday's attack, your data is safe."

The RSS service, which emerged as an alternative to Google Reader when that service shut down last year, has taken what security researcher Graham Cluley categorized as a "plucky attitude" toward this week's threats.

In Wednesday's attack, hackers were trying to extort money from Feedly. "We refused to give in and are working with our network providers to mitigate the attack as best we can," the team said.

Cluley said Wednesday that he feels for the company, adding that "it's right not to give in to the blackmailers who are essentially running an extortion racket." Like feeding a stray cat, paying up would only encourage the attackers to return. Which they seem to have done, anyway.

Users can keep an eye on the Feedly blog and Twitter feed for more details as updates become available.
