Facebook Gives Users More Control Over Ads

Facebook ads are unavoidable, but soon, U.S. users will gain more control over what products and services they see on the social network.

In a Thursday blog post, Facebook said the No. 1 marketing request is that ads are more relevant to users' interests.

"Today, we learn about your interests primarily from the things you do on Facebook, such as Pages you like," the company said. "Starting soon … we will also include information from some of the websites and apps you use."

Facebook's new preferences tool will be accessible on every ad: Select the drop-down menu, and choose "Why am I seeing this?" to add or remove interests.

So, for instance, if you're in the market for a new TV, and you've been surfing the Web, conducting research on the most high-tech sets, Facebook may be more inclined to show you ads for deals on a TV.

But if you're not really the electronics type, or don't have any need for accessories like speakers or a game console, then you can simply tweak your interests on Facebook to ensure you see more ads for local bicycle repair shops or organic grocery stores.

Unfortunately, the number of Facebook ads will not diminish, but hopefully you'll at least find them more interesting.

The ad preferences tool will roll out to U.S. Facebook users over the next few weeks; the company said it is "working hard" to expand the feature globally in the coming months.

Users can, of course, opt out of this type of ad targeting altogether by specifying browser settings on the Web and via mobile.

In March, the social network launched Premium Video ads, which automatically come to life as users scroll through their timeline. A month later, Facebook revealed a mobile ad placement system called Audience Network, which offers a new way for advertisers to extend campaigns beyond the site and into other mobile apps.
